FVPS 2024 | FULL SCHEDULE AND PROGRAM

The 2024 Film and Video Poetry Symposium will take place in Los Angeles, California, at Los Angeles Center for Digital Art. The event begins on November 7 and concludes on November 27, 2024. This symposium not only represents the postponed 2021 event, but also honors the artists, family members, poets, and filmmakers who helped revive our platform and relaunch with this powerful program.

FVPSociety will present 16 film blocks starting on November 7, 2024. Our platform will also feature 10 media installations, open to the public at Los Angeles Center for Digital Art from Wednesday through Sunday, 12 pm - 5 pm, between November 7 and November 27. FVPSociety also will launch a 24/7 online streaming network: FVPSociety.com/live-stream, available from November 4 to December 4, 2024. This "public access channel" allows viewers from around the world to experience a curated selection of films from the symposium!

All screenings, online programming, and the media gallery are free and open to the public.

FVPS MEDIA GALLERY PREMIERE · UNDERCURRENT

Undercurrents is the FVPS 2024 principle exhibition and opens on November 7, 2024. This exhibition is comprised of short films, digital and video art inspired by poetry, poetry films, live poetry readings, and media installations, all commenting on the convergence of transgressive and popular modes of poetry media making. The goal of this exhibit is to not only present both poetry and media accomplished through exceptional artistry and perspective, but to also bring the poets, filmmakers, video artists, and new media makers into a public dialogue focused on the dynamic mergence within these practices.

FILM BLOCK 2 · NON-FILMS

Programmed by Brian Ratigan, an award-winning director and curator. He brings his expertise to FVPSociety once again with the execution of a diverse selection of animated films. As the founder of Non Films, a label known for ephemeral animation and experimental cinema, he runs a bi-monthly short film screening series in New York called DarkRoom. Ratigan’s work as programmer and juror extends to the Slamdance Film Festival, Atlanta Film Festival, Chicago Underground Film Festival, and many more. His work has been featured in the New York Times and his passion for animation is endless. This program offers a very broad spectrum of animation, from outsider art and primal animated expressions, to intuitive pieces, and commercially established works. This program challenges traditional perceptions of “animation”, prompting reflection on the true nature and possibilities of the medium.

Alexis Krasilovsky is a pioneering poet and filmmaker in the genre of poetry films, blending the rhythmic beauty of poetic language with the visual dynamism of cinema. Her work in poetry film spans over 5 decades and explores themes of politics, identity, consciousness, and the human condition. Krasilovsky’s films are notable for their often transgressive visuals and topics, her gifted ability for shifting lyrical interplay between image, sound, and text, and creating a unique sensory experience that evokes both imaginal depth and intellectual reflection.

From extremely intimate reflections on personal experience such as INSIDE STORY where Alexis conducts and creates the world’s first boroscoped art video, incorporating footage of her cervix. To broader social commentaries such as WHAT MEMPHIS NEEDS, a 16mm filmpoem that provides an eviscerating cross-examination of Memphis history and society. Her works transcend linguistic and cultural barriers, uniting audiences through the universal language of cinema.

Haunted After Fear is a thought-provoking film by performing artist and experimental filmmaker Sylvia Toy St. Louis. This important work delves into the complexities of the human psyche through a surrealistic lens. A nonlinear narrative, interweaving elements of spoken word poetry, horror, dreams, and a fragmented romance, by employing a extraordinarily intuitive cinematic style. Toy St. Louis creates a rich tapestry of visual imagery that evokes a sense of unease and introspection.

The film explores the concept of "fugaz," a term that signifies fleeting moments of anxiety and existential contemplation. The protagonist navigates a reality that feels increasingly haunted, grappling with past experiences that resurface continuously. This film exemplifies Toy St. Louis's innovative approach to storytelling, merging performance art with primeval cinematic techniques to create an immersive experience.

Haunted After Fear will be preceded by a screening of THE TELLS, written and directed by San Franscico based filmmaker and poet Scott Stark.

Fifteen years in the making, The Complete Works is a visual tour de force that adapts the work of internationally acclaimed avant-garde poet bpNichol to the screen. The title of the film alludes to a work in which Nichol typed out on a page all the letters and signs as they appear on the keys of the typewriter with the footnote “any and all permutations of the above listed elements.” Complete works anthologies presume to collect the life’s work of an author. FILM BLOCK 6 · THE FIRST LINE OF CHINA

Selected for featured viewing by artist and architect Cheryl Wing-Zi Wong, The First Line of China is an memoir written in first-person narrative, which presents and examines the current status of filmmaker Hanwen Zhang’s birthplace, an isolated industrial town in Northeast China, as well as his personal relationship with it. The town was constructed by a local state-owned cement factory to feed and host the workers and the families who migrated here. Hanwen Zhang’s film examines this factory-town model as a combining result of the urban planning scheme and the radical industrialization of China in the 1980s, while the communal living experience serves as a bearer of a collective memory.

Alla Damsker’s Tsvetaeva.Open engages with the critical scrutiny directed at Russian poet Marina Ivanovna Tsvetaeva, renowned for her reflections on the Russian Revolution of 1917, the subsequent Moscow famine, and the untimely death of her daughter. Utilizing newly discovered letters, diaries, and archival documents, the film meticulously chronicles Tsvetaeva's life from 1917 to 1922. Alla Damsker collaborates with award-winning actor and producer Anatoly Bely, alongside literature specialists and archivists, to provide a fresh examination of Tsvetaeva’s complex narrative, offering insights into her artistic legacy and the turbulent historical context in which she lived.

The Adrian Brinkerhoff Poetry Foundation's
mission is to expand access to poetry and promote a deeper understanding and appreciation of literature. Launched in April 2020, the foundation collaborates with various poetry institutions, such as the Academy of American Poets, and Poetry Ireland, to bring poetry to wider audiences through innovative programs.

This program is part of the Brinkerhoff Foundation’s key initiative: the "Read By" series, where both established and emerging poets read their works, accompanied by film productions that enhance the poetic experience. Directors Matthew Thompson and Jean Coleman capture readings from poets such as Jenny Xie, winner of the 2018 Walt Whitman Award from the Academy of American Poets, and Tyehimba Jess, whose book Olio received the 2017 Pulitzer Prize for Poetry.

FILM BLOCK 10 · IN CELEBRATION OF NICK ZEDD

Dear Friends,

Beginning on May 22, 2021, I had the honor to collaborate with the father of The Cinema of Transgression, Nick Zedd. We corresponded for several months with the goal to develop a program that outlined his philosophy on cinema. I sent poetry films and videos to him that I thought may resonate. He shared his observations and was never impressed, but he wasn’t the perpetual cynic either. He was inspiring and he consistently engaged. I sensed we were both committed to a longer journey of building a proper program he would allow his name to be on. By mid-September he began to report terrible illness. I lost contact with Nick on October 15, 2021. I learned of his death on Monday, February 28, 2022.

I crafted this program intuitively, by referencing the notes and films we shared, along with the essence of his statements, and drawings he made for my kids. This program is for those who dare to confront the shadows of their existence and question the narratives that they allow to name and bind them. It is not designed for entertainment; this is a deliberate offering of visceral experiences. These films either reflect rawness, or are arranged in a clever way to help unearth truths and emotional states our society prefers to bury.

FVPSociety will also acknowledge the tension that comes with curating a body of work like this. In many ways, folks may see us as gatekeepers, or “poetry taxonomists”, functioning within a model that decides what the public sees. I grapple with this paradox, knowing that I am framing these experiences for audiences while simultaneously trying to dismantle the idea of controlled perception that the Cinema of Transgression so ardently resisted. Yet, I believe in this film block because it disrupts, challenges, and ultimately expands how FVPSociety will operate.

I celebrate Nick because I've come to realize how integral he was to the success of this program. While I’ve managed the logistics for this event independently, there’s an undeniable quality he brought that I can't replicate. Perhaps it’s his charisma or simply the sense of validation his presence provided; regardless, working with him elevated the entire experience as well as my knowledge of self. Without Nick, I’ve recognized the challenge of capturing the essence of what he aimed to achieve both on the screen and in his life. If I had known how to capture this essence on my own, I would have no reason to celebrate.

Cheryl Wing-Zi Wong is a dynamic artist and trained architect based in New York City, renowned for her innovative approach that intertwines art, architecture, and the public realm. Filmed over four years on 16mm, Leanna Kaiser’s Babes in the Woods is an experimental portrait of Sage and her two children living on a commune in the forests of Missouri. Through subtle, intuitive observation, Kaiser’s film explores not only motherhood but also personhood, reflecting on the nurturing of the land, our offspring, and the life within ourselves, knowing they all may be one. While the children know a near-Edenic existence, the adults carry the knowledge of another world. An urban lifestyle that they may one day return to. Babes in the Woods offers a profound exploration of how living off the grid can heal social wounds and reshape our sense of self, both now, and into an imagined future.

Babes in the Woods will be preceded by a screening of Louis Abbot’s short poetry film WABI - SABI, written and recited by Montreal-born, Edmonton-based spoken word poet Kathy Fisher.

Experimental filmmaker David Finkelstein is a Guggenheim Fellow. His newest film Dirt is an extended poetic meditation on the American relation to the soil, and the energies buried within it. A collage of poetic imagery, music, and invocatory language, the film follows two men in a series of esoteric experiments. Their words take us to unexpected landscapes, populated by revengeful toasters, flying fiddles, an unusual game of tennis,
and a mountaintop crowned with an electric guitar. A postmodern video opera, Dirt bathes the viewer in music, language, and visual spectacle. Conversation with the filmmaker to follow screening.

Dirt will be preceded by a screening of Djenba Skye Ward’s short poetry film When I was a Tree, written and recited by Los Angeles poet-in-residence Dorothy Randall Grey.

Beginning on November 4, 2024 The Film and Video Poetry Society will launch a 24 hour, 7 day a week video poetry channel that will conclude broadcasting on December 4, 2024. The following films have been specially selected for online transmission for what we have designed to emulate the 24 hour “television” entertainment cycle.
